Dr. Isabel Hui Liu, Deputy Director of the Scottish Confucius Institute for Business and Communication at Heriot-Watt University has been appointed by UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) as the official Chinese interpreter for COP26 presidency events starting on 1st November in Glasgow. She will play a vital role in intercultural understanding when facilitating communication between national Government representatives in discussions and negotiations.
Interpreters are an essential part of any international negotiation: considerable preparation has been required to prepare for exchange of detailed scientific information at this vitally important gathering in order to capture both the content and technical terminologies as well as the nuances of meaning to ensure proper understanding.
Isabel commented, “Without the support from the soft power, hard power can’t really achieve its purpose.”
